Most common causes of hair loss

The modern cosmetics market offers a wide range of hair care products, and styling and updo trends change at a rapid pace. In this flood, it is easy to make care mistakes that can lead to scalp problems or hair loss.

What are the most common hair care mistakes?

1. Incorrectly chosen shampoo

One of the most common mistakes is improper selection of care products, especially shampoos, which should be tailored to the needs of the scalp, not the hair.

Shampoo, as a basic care product, is primarily meant to take care of the scalp, not just the hair itself. Choosing the wrong product can lead to dryness of the scalp, and consequently to hair loss. Aggressive detergents and chemical substances present in some products can remove natural oils from the scalp, leading to moisture loss, which makes the hair brittle and dull. Moreover, using inappropriate products disrupts the scalp microbiome, which can cause irritation, itching, and hair loss.

2. Inappropriate care for a scalp prone to excessive sebum secretion

Another mistake is improper care for a scalp prone to excessive sebum secretion. Using overly mild products or not using exfoliations can lead to clogged hair follicles, and as a result, weakening of hair structure, hair loss, and also accumulation of bacteria on the scalp.

3. Leaving wet hair to dry naturally

Many of us face the dilemma of whether to dry hair or let it dry naturally. Often, hair left undried, especially when going to bed with it, becomes an ideal environment for the development of bacteria and fungi that love moisture and warmth. This can lead to scalp infections and dandruff. Moreover, wet hair is more prone to breakage – going to bed with wet hair exposes it to greater damage than drying with a hairdryer. It is worth noting that modern hairdryers with ionization function do not pose a threat to hair and their use may be less harmful than leaving hair damp overnight. If someone dislikes using a hairdryer, it is worth drying the hair from the scalp while leaving the rest to dry naturally.

4. Tying hair in a tight ponytail

Frequently tying hair in a too tight ponytail or using strong gels and hairsprays can lead to hair loss. Although occasionally such styles will not have a significant impact on our hair, frequent exposure to excessive tension can weaken the hair structure and hair follicle. Too tight hairstyles may impede natural blood flow to the scalp, leading to weakened bulbs and hair loss. Excess of gels and hairsprays can irritate the scalp and clog hair follicles. It is advisable to use hair ties that are gentle and made of silk, especially for those struggling with androgenic hair loss. Such ties will reduce the risk of hair breakage.

5. Wearing tight, non-breathable headwear

Wearing tight, non-breathable headwear, such as caps at work, can also contribute to hair loss. Headwear, especially those made of materials that do not allow air to pass through, can trap moisture and heat around the scalp. Such conditions promote the growth of fungi and bacteria, leading to skin irritation, dandruff, and in extreme cases even scalp diseases. Tight headwear can also disrupt proper blood flow, which leads to weakening of hair bulbs and inhibition of hair growth.

Proper care of hair and scalp is crucial for their condition and limiting the problem of hair loss. Avoiding basic mistakes allows maintaining a healthy scalp and strong hair. It is worth remembering that regular trichological treatments, such as scalp exfoliations or specialized strengthening treatments, can effectively eliminate causes of hair loss and support healthy hair growth. Proper prevention and conscious care are key to beautiful and well-maintained hair.
