Perfect walk in Gdańsk

06.08.2025

Gdańsk is a city with a unique atmosphere, full of history, art, and breathtaking views. For Guests of the Marina Club Hotel***, we offer a special walking route that allows you to immerse yourself in the magical atmosphere of the Main City and discover its greatest treasures within a few hours. It is an ideal option for both a leisurely afternoon and an active morning – regardless of the season.

Start: Marina Club Hotel

Start your walk right in front of the hotel entrance. From here, there is a wonderful view of the renovated Granary Island and the modern yacht marina, where especially in summer various vessels are moored. Head left from the exit and after crossing the bascule footbridge located immediately to the right of Szafarnia Street, go straight along Stągiewna Street, through the heart of Granary Island.

Green Gate, Long Wharf and Crane

At the end of Stągiewna Street is the Green Gate – a monumental 16th-century gate that leads out to Long Market. But there will be time for that later. Just before the Green Gate, turn right and walk along the waterfront, passing galleries with amber jewelry, restaurants, and cafes. This is also an ideal place to take a break and enjoy coffee with a view of the water. From here, there is a magnificent view of Gdańsk’s most recognizable symbol – the Gothic Crane over the Motława River. It is the largest and oldest port crane in medieval Europe, which today houses a branch of the National Maritime Museum.

Mariacka Street and St. Mary's Basilica

Before the Crane, turn left into one of the most atmospheric streets in Gdańsk – Mariacka Street. The cobbled street, decorated with stone thresholds and wrought iron railings, leads to the majestic St. Mary's Basilica – the largest brick church in the world.

The entrance to the basilica is via Plebania Street – the shortest street in Gdańsk, measuring only 31 meters.

Enter the church and admire the monumental interior, the famous astronomical clock, and Gothic and Baroque altars. For the more active, we recommend climbing the tower – after almost 400 steps, you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the entire Tricity, Gdańsk Bay, and the port.

Piwna Street and the Great Armoury

After descending from the tower, head down Piwna Street – another gem of the Main City. Here you will find numerous restaurants, and at its end, in a central location, the impressive Great Armoury, a pearl of Gdańsk Mannerism. If you have time, visit the Academy of Fine Arts, where exhibitions of young artists are often held.

Long Market and Neptune Fountain

Following Tkacka Street, you will reach Długa Street. From here stretches the representative Long Market, formerly the main trade route of the city. Admire the colorful facades of the townhouses, the historic Main Town Hall, and enjoy the atmosphere of a place that has witnessed great events over centuries. The walk continues to the heart of Gdańsk – the Neptune Fountain, proudly standing in front of the Artus Court. It is one of the most photographed spots in the city. From here, you can head back to the Green Gate, from where it is a straightforward walk to Marina Club Hotel.

Ołowianka and the Baltic Philharmonic

If you want to extend your walk a bit, the Ołowianka island is 4 minutes from the hotel, where the Polish Baltic Philharmonic is located. This is a place where history meets culture – the modern concert hall is housed in former port warehouses.

Duration:

A leisurely walk, with time for photos, coffee, and visits to selected attractions, will take about 2–3 hours. The route is easy and accessible also for families with children and seniors.

Tips:

  • Bring a camera – the Main City offers an endless number of picturesque shots.

  • It’s best to start your walk in the morning or late afternoon when the light beautifully highlights the details of the townhouses.

  • In summer, it is advisable to book tickets for attractions in advance, especially for St. Mary's Basilica and the tower.

  • If the weather is unfavorable – most of the route can be comfortably walked under an umbrella, and cafes along the way offer cozy shelter.

Summary:
A walk through the Main City in Gdańsk is not only a journey through streets but a trip through time – from medieval monuments to modern cultural spaces. Returning to Marina Club Hotel***, you will be filled with images and memories. It is exactly the kind of moment when you can feel the true spirit of Gdańsk – a city that continuously inspires.
